XRP Holders Can Now Earn Fees from Kraken's DeFi Customers

Kraken's integration with Firelight's coverage protocol creates a potential income stream for XRP holders willing to provide collateral on Flare, though the arrangement carries risks including potential losses from protocol failures.

XRP Holders Can Now Earn Fees from Kraken's DeFi Customers

Kraken has integrated its Protected Strategies USDC vault with Firelight, a coverage protocol launched in October. The integration, arranged by Sentora, the vault's independent curator, creates a mechanism through which XRP holders can earn fees generated by DeFi protection purchases.

Under the arrangement, fees from the USDC vault flow to Firelight, where collateral providers who stake XRP-linked capital receive a share of premiums in exchange for accepting losses from eligible exploits and protocol failures. For Kraken's vault depositors, the protection comes at the cost of a lower investment yield, as Kraken's published annual percentage yield already reflects coverage fees set by Firelight and Sentora, which can change monthly. Kraken receives none of those fees and neither arranges nor guarantees payouts.

How the Earnings Mechanism Works

Firelight operates on Flare, where participants supply FXRP, a representation of XRP created through the network's FAssets system. Stakers receive stXRP, which tracks their claim on the pool backing Firelight's coverage commitments. When vault operators pay for protection, Firelight converts fees paid in USDC into FXRP, increasing the collateral backing each staker's position. Returns compound through the redemption value of stXRP rather than through additional tokens distributed directly to wallets.

The structure ties potential earnings to the amount of protection customers purchase and continue renewing. Firelight initially covered Sentora's USD Protected and Protected RWA vaults before expanding to the Kraken-distributed product, which adds another fee source to the same pool.

Risks for Capital Providers

Those returns come with direct obligations. Firelight's staked capital supports all active covered vaults, meaning a provider earning premiums associated with Kraken can suffer losses from qualifying incidents elsewhere in the portfolio. The protocol first pays validated claims from a reserve called the First-Loss Buffer. If that reserve is exhausted, Firelight proportionally reduces the underlying assets backing each staker's position, a process known as slashing.

Covered events include specified smart-contract exploits, oracle failures, governance attacks, and failures in protocols' economic mechanisms. Ordinary asset-price declines and routine liquidity shortages fall outside the arrangement.

Capital providers also face withdrawal constraints. Withdrawals currently take 30 to 60 days after an unstaking request, and exposure to eligible losses can continue during part of that waiting period even though premium accrual ends when the request is submitted.

Sustainability Dependent on Renewal Cycle

Firelight resets coverage terms, prices and capacity across 30-day periods. Each renewal gives vault operators another opportunity to weigh the cost against protection value, and it determines how much premium revenue can continue flowing to stakers. A decline in XRP's price can reduce available backing, potentially constraining how much new protection Firelight can offer.

The protocol has not disclosed how much premium income the Kraken vault has generated or how much FXRP has been acquired from those fees. The sustainability of the income stream depends on whether customers continue paying for protection and whether more capital is committed to back it.
