Tracked x402 payments on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) have approached nearly 12 million transactions as autonomous artificial intelligence agents purchase digital services. The x402 protocol is an internet payment framework that utilizes the HTTP "402 Payment Required" response to signal that software must pay before accessing an online resource.
J. Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, announced that transaction counts grew from 1 million to 10 million in under three months. By Oct. 3, settlement infrastructure and dashboard operator t54 recorded 11,965,947 entries in its x402 transaction history, maintaining a seven-day average of 525,618 payments per day.
Under the t54 payment flow, an online provider responds to a request with a price and payment requirements. The automated buyer signs the transaction, a facilitator verifies it, and the transfer is submitted to the blockchain before the provider delivers the requested resource. Transactions can be denominated in XRP or Ripple USD (RLUSD), a dollar-backed stablecoin.
Akinyele noted that the majority of activity stems from data purchases and AI inference. Offerings have also expanded to include financial data, risk, and credit. Developers connect autonomous software to wallets using Ripple's AI payment tools, which support wallet creation, balance checks, and spending tracking. Ripple highlights settlement times of three to five seconds and predictable transaction costs as key features supporting automated machine-to-machine commerce.
