Yuga Labs has launched Mudwater, a trading card game with physical and digital Bored Ape cards on the Solana blockchain. The original Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection itself continues to exist on Ethereum.
Initial Access and Supply Structure
Existing BAYC and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) token holders receive first access to card packs. Each Bored Ape NFT unlocks 10 packs, while each MAYC NFT unlocks two packs. The total supply is capped at 10,000 boxes.
Yuga airdropped a Totem to all BAYC and MAYC token holders to facilitate pack claims. The Totem uses ERC-6551, an Ethereum standard that grants an NFT its own wallet.
Card Inventory and Rarity Tiers
Each pack contains 10 cards, with 24 packs filling one box. Across 10,000 boxes, this totals 240,000 packs or 2.4 million cards.
Bored Ape holders can claim 100,000 packs, representing approximately 42% of the set before open trading begins. Eight Bored Ape cards exist as serialized cracked-ice 1/1s, with each card unique. Yuga describes these as the grails of the collection.
The Mudwater collection spans 120 BAYC art pieces, with foil versions and both physical and digital formats available.
Market Context
Bored Ape cards already trade on OpenSea, alongside separate collections for Totems and packs. Yuga plans to allow holders to upgrade packs into boxes and cases.
The launch occurs as the NFT market faced challenges, with the market cap declining toward record lows in June as Ethereum experienced a downturn. However, tokenized collectibles grew in the second quarter while most crypto sectors contracted. Some NFT platforms have retreated, with marketplace Blur recently announcing its website shutdown.
Yuga cautioned holders to verify all claim links with official channels, citing security risks that previously required a white-hat rescue operation after a protocol exploit.
