Privacy-focused digital assets significantly outperformed the broader cryptocurrency market during August, led by strong gains in top privacy coins.
Zcash Reaches $14 Billion Market Cap
Zcash (ZEC) surged 82% over the month, lifting its market capitalization from approximately $8 billion at the start of August to over $14 billion by month's end. The sharp increase was driven partly by macroeconomic factors affecting the broader cryptocurrency market, but received an additional boost from Grayscale's launch of a spot Zcash exchange-traded fund near the end of August. The ETF provides investors with exposure to ZEC through a publicly traded vehicle, removing the need for direct wallet and private key management. Most of Zcash's gains concentrated in the final week of August.
Monero Gains 40% on Exchange Integration
Monero (XMR) posted a 40% monthly gain, with momentum building toward the end of August. In the final week alone, XMR gained nearly 20%, pushing its market capitalization toward $10 billion. The increase coincided with reported upgrades to cross-chain decentralized exchanges, including native swap capabilities integrated into Thorchain that offer permissionless liquidity pools for XMR.
Broader Privacy Sector Movement
Smaller privacy-focused protocols also posted gains during August, including DASH (up 38.3%), RAIL (up 37.6%), and ZANO (up 26.7%). Some privacy coins declined, however, with beldex (BDX) falling 4.2% and humanity (H) dropping 4.4%.
Privacy assets continue to face regulatory scrutiny, yet decentralized liquidity options and technical developments maintain baseline demand for privacy-focused protocols. The sector's momentum ahead will depend on technical advancements and compliance frameworks, including the OECD's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework expected in 2026.
