Zcash retreated from an eight-year high on Monday after shedding part of a rally that saw the privacy coin surge by over 55% in a matter of days. The upward movement was triggered by Grayscale's efforts to convert its Zcash Trust into a United States spot exchange-traded fund.
Zcash (ZEC) climbed above $880 on August 23 before easing, marking its strongest price level since 2018. Prior to the slight drop, weekly gains reached approximately 66%. Trading around $814, the token maintains a market capitalization exceeding $13.7 billion and ranks 11th on CoinMarketCap. The asset remains below its all-time high of $5,941.80 recorded in October 2016, though current trading activity is higher than it was during that period. Approximately one year ago, ZEC traded near $40, reflecting an increase of over 1,805% since then.
ETF Filing and Regulatory Context
The rally began after Grayscale submitted an amended registration statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The asset manager seeks to list the Zcash Trust on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH as an ETF, with shares expected to begin trading on or around August 25 pending regulatory approval. Securing approval would establish the first U.S. ETF tracking a privacy coin, a sector generally avoided by regulated products due to regulatory concerns regarding money laundering and sanctions evasion linked to zero-knowledge cryptography features that hide sender, recipient, and transaction amounts.
Grayscale's filing also disclosed non-binding discussions for DCG International Investments, a subsidiary of Digital Currency Group, to seed the fund with 200,000 ZEC, valued at approximately $110 million at the cited valuation. As of August 21, the trust held approximately $263.5 million in assets.
Futures Activity and Broader Market Trends
Investor activity extended beyond spot buying into derivatives. Open interest in ZEC perpetual futures nearly doubled from $962.5 million on August 19 to $1.8 billion by Monday, with 24-hour volume reaching $5.3 billion. The average eight-hour funding rate was 0.0106%, indicating traders paid to maintain long positions.
Market observers noted that the price movement coincided with a wider cryptocurrency market rally featuring double-digit percentage gains for Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin approached $80,000 following a Treasury bond-buyback announcement and a wave of short liquidations.
Upcoming Community Vote
Zcash also experienced internal catalysts, including a community vote on the NU7 upgrade organized by Valar Group and Project Tachyon. The vote opens on August 25, runs for approximately 18 days, and concludes on September 14. Eligibility for the vote was determined by shielded ZEC held in the Ironwood pool at a network snapshot on August 24, which may have encouraged holders to shift funds into shielded balances. The ballot could impact Zcash's issuance schedule.
