The revenue figures also exceed high-performance computing colocation benchmarks of roughly $222 per MWh, which is the rate data centers typically earn from renting rack space to AI and cloud workloads.
Drivers of the Revenue Gap
The primary driver behind the gap is price performance. ZEC has traded in the $800 to $890 range following a significant rebound, including a 68.7% jump during a single week in 2026. The hardware powering this activity is Bitmain's Z15 Pro ASIC, which is built for the Equihash algorithm used by Zcash's proof-of-work network.
Earlier in 2026, mining revenue estimates ranged between $373 and $769 per MWh, positioning the current $727 figure in the upper half of that range and indicating sustained price strength.
Institutional Investments and Market Context
Institutional interest has also emerged around Zcash infrastructure. Cypherpunk Technologies closed a $33.33 million equity deal on August 18, 2026, acquiring 4.2 gigasols per second of hashrate, which gave the company approximately 18% of the network's total hashing capacity.
Launched in 2016 as a privacy-focused digital asset utilizing zero-knowledge proofs, Zcash's mining margins remain tied to its market price. A 50% drop in ZEC price would reduce revenue toward the $360 range, while a return to 2024 price levels below $100 would significantly impact mining profitability.
