Zakura, the developer behind a Zcash full node client, has released Zakura Common, an open-source library that significantly accelerates private transaction speeds on the Zcash network. The upgrade compresses shielded transaction creation from over three seconds to under 200 milliseconds.
The improvement does not require a hard fork or consensus change. Compatible wallets can integrate the library immediately and begin serving faster transactions without network-wide coordination.
Performance Improvements
The library delivers substantial speed gains across multiple computational operations:
- Mobile proof generation improved over 14 times
- Desktop performance improved by over five times
- Sinsemilla hashing, a core cryptographic operation in Zcash's Orchard protocol, saw a 21-fold improvement
- Trial decryption, used by wallets to scan the blockchain for incoming payments, got 1.5 times faster
- zk-SNARK verification, the zero-knowledge proof system underpinning Zcash's privacy guarantees, now runs four to eight times quicker
Implementation and Integration
Zakura Common is dual-licensed under MIT and Apache 2.0 and will ship as part of Zakura version 1.3.0. Wallets built on Zakura's infrastructure, such as Vizor, can integrate the improvements without waiting for broader network coordination.
Sean Bowe, co-founder of both Zcash and Zakura, emphasized that the libraries deliver measurable benefits for shielded wallets and full nodes, enhancing responsiveness and user experience without requiring rule changes.
Market Context
ZEC, Zcash's native token, increased approximately 5% following the announcement. The release aligns with Zakura's broader roadmap toward high-throughput private payments and the Tachyon initiative, which aims to improve scalability across the Zcash network, wallets, and verification processes.
