Zcash (ZEC) recently climbed to $888, marking its highest price level since 2018, before pulling back to around $843. Despite the pullback, the privacy coin remained up roughly 7% over a 24-hour period and about 48% since August 20. Over the past year, the asset has appreciated by more than 1,800%, recovering from a low of $16 two years ago. However, it remains well below its all-time high of $3,191.93, which was set in October 2016 during thin-liquidity trading.
Alongside the price movement, ZEC perpetual futures open interest nearly doubled from $962.5 million on August 19 to $1.8 billion by Monday, according to data from Loris Tools. Over the same timeframe, 24-hour trading volume reached $5.3 billion, and the average eight-hour funding rate settled at 0.0106%, indicating that traders paid a premium to hold long positions. Market observers note that crowded futures markets and positive funding rates can amplify both short squeezes and sudden liquidations.
Market interest in Zcash has grown over the past year as investors sought alternatives to Bitcoin with enhanced privacy protections. Unlike transparent networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, Zcash utilizes shielded balances to obscure transaction details. Additional attention followed a November filing by Grayscale to convert its Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund, a proposal that remains under review.
The asset's upward trajectory faced a challenge in June when developers using Claude Opus 4.8 disclosed a vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool that could have permitted undetectable counterfeiting. An emergency patch was issued in June, followed by the activation of the Ironwood upgrade in July. Ironwood retired the Orchard pool and added accounting safeguards intended to trap counterfeit tokens in the older pool, though developers could not confirm whether the flaw was actively exploited.
Activity around the network also expanded in August when Cypherpunk Technologies, backed by the Winklevoss brothers, launched a Zcash mining operation. The company estimates its mining operation accounts for 18% of the network's hashrate. Cypherpunk currently holds approximately 323,394 ZEC—valued at about $268 million—and maintains a goal of acquiring 5% of the circulating supply.
