Zcash's 19x Climb Leaves Room for Growth, Says Grayscale

Zcash's 19x Climb Leaves Room for Growth, Says Grayscale

Zcash has climbed approximately 19-fold over the past year but still represents a fraction of Bitcoin's market valuation, according to analysis from asset manager Grayscale. The privacy-focused cryptocurrency ranked 11th globally with a market capitalization of $13.74 billion as of August 29, compared to Bitcoin's $1.56 trillion—making Bitcoin roughly 114 times larger.

Grayscale's Head of Research Zach Pandl identified three factors that could enable Zcash to capture additional market share: financial privacy capabilities, cybersecurity development, and cross-chain connectivity through intents technology. The asset manager emphasized that privacy features may become increasingly relevant as artificial intelligence advances surveillance capabilities.

Zcash differs from Bitcoin by supporting shielded transfers that use zero-knowledge proofs to conceal transaction details, including sender, recipient, and amount. Like Bitcoin, it operates on a proof-of-work model and maintains a fixed supply of 21 million coins.

Grayscale calculated hypothetical price scenarios based on potential market-share shifts. If Zcash captured 2% of Bitcoin's market capitalization, ZEC could reach $1,622; at 5%, $4,054; and at 10%, $8,109. The asset manager noted these figures represent scenarios rather than price forecasts and emphasized that Zcash remains a smaller, more volatile, and higher-risk asset.

Market access expanded on August 25 when Grayscale's Zcash ETF began trading on NYSE Arca under ticker ZCSH, allowing investors to gain spot ZEC exposure through a publicly traded vehicle. The Zcash Foundation addressed security concerns in the first quarter by patching two Zebra vulnerabilities, including a critical remote denial-of-service flaw and a high-severity potential chain-split issue.
