The cryptocurrency market staged a strong recovery in August 2026, adding approximately $500 billion to reach an aggregate valuation above $2.7 trillion. The rally was driven by macroeconomic policy, specifically a U.S. Treasury announcement to double bond buybacks coupled with dovish commentary from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Bitcoin rose nearly 25% during the month, climbing from around $63,500 to breach the $81,000 mark multiple times. The gains trimmed bitcoin's year-to-date losses to just over 10% and raised the possibility it could finish 2026 with net gains despite a rocky start to the year.
Privacy Coins Lead Performance
Privacy coin Zcash emerged as August's top performer among major digital assets, surging 82% from roughly $472 at the start of the month to peak near $890 on August 30. Zcash closed the month just above $860.
Monero, another privacy coin, posted gains of nearly 45%, rising from just over $360 to nearly $540 by month's end.
Other Notable Gainers
Hyperliquid logged gains exceeding 62%, reaching a record high of $86.71 on August 27 and rising to the 10th-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. Solana reclaimed the $100 threshold with gains exceeding 40%, reaching a multi-month high of just under $110 before retreating to $102.
Chainlink, Ethereum, and XRP posted gains of 37%, 32%, and 28%, respectively. BNB and Bitcoin Cash each finished with 18% gains.
Stellar and Tron were relatively flat with just over 1% gains, while LEO was the only top-20 digital asset to record a loss, closing the month 5% lower.
