Zondacrypto Collapses as Executives Vanish and User Funds Become Inaccessible

Zondacrypto, formerly a prominent cryptocurrency platform in Eastern and Central Europe, has effectively collapsed after its top managers disappeared and hundreds of thousands of users found themselves blocked from accessing their funds. The exchange's ZND token has lost 99.9% of its value, and the platform has remained offline since April.

The platform originated as BitBay in Katowice in 2014, founded by Sylwester Suszek. According to previous reports, Suszek vanished in March 2022 after visiting a fuel depot near Katowice. Polish prosecutors subsequently charged an associate, Marian Wszolek, with organized-crime membership, large-scale VAT fraud, money laundering, and unlawful deprivation of liberty in connection with the disappearance. Wszolek later disappeared as well.

Przemyslaw Kral, an attorney representing Suszek, assumed control of affairs. Kral's last social media communication was on April 16, 2026, advising clients to remain calm, though reports noted multiple alleged sightings of him internationally. Robert Nogacki, a Warsaw-based lawyer representing affected clients, asserted that the operation was fraudulent from its inception.

While management previously claimed the platform held 4,500 Bitcoins accessible only through keys held by the missing founder, blockchain forensics firm Recoveris reported that Zondacrypto's primary Bitcoin hot wallet holdings dropped by 99.7% between August 2024 and March 2026, leaving only about 0.086 BTC worth approximately $9,700 by April 1. Recoveris also identified approximately $21 million transferred from Zondacrypto wallets to Kraken between mid-December 2025 and early April. The exchange declined to disclose wallet addresses as proof of reserves, citing European Union MiCA and DORA rules, though those regulations do not prohibit such disclosures.

Regulatory pressures mounted as Estonia's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) cancelled the license of BB Trade Estonia OÜ, the parent company of Zondacrypto, on June 29, 2026. The cancellation occurred just days before Article 143 of the EU's MiCA regulation was set to alter national regulatory regimes on July 1.

In August 2026, the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Katowice announced that its investigation into Zondacrypto had been integrated into a broader National Prosecutor's Office inquiry handled by the organized crime and corruption department in the Silesia region. Additionally, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk alleged in April that the platform had financial connections to the Russian mafia and right-wing politicians.
