Aave, Ethena, and Hyperliquid Founders Identify Different Competitive Threats

At TOKEN2049 Singapore on October 7-8, 2026, three prominent DeFi founders outlined their competitive landscapes in a panel moderated by a16z crypto's Robbie Petersen, alongside Synthetix's Kain Warwick.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov identified banks as the protocol's main competition, positioning Aave as a challenger to traditional finance. The lending protocol is expanding through real-world assets (RWAs) and tokenized assets, targeting a future where crypto-native lending surpasses traditional borrowing by 2027. Aave has previously reached liquidity peaks of approximately $76 billion.

Ethena founder Guy Young named Circle as his protocol's rival, framing the competition squarely within the stablecoin market. Ethena's USDe stablecoin has reached approximately $15 billion in supply through recent growth.

Hyperliquid CEO Jeff Yan stated his project does not view itself as having a competitor, and led a dedicated conference session titled "Hyperliquid: Rebuilding Finance from First Principles."

Market Valuations

As of mid-October 2026, Hyperliquid's HYPE token traded at $80-$81, representing a market cap of around $18 billion. Ethena's ENA token traded at approximately $0.21, with a market cap of about $2.8 billion, placing it below Hyperliquid despite USDe's larger supply.

Implications for Investors

The three founders' answers reflect distinct investment theses: Aave on tokenized lending displacing traditional credit, Ethena on stablecoin market share, and Hyperliquid on purpose-built derivatives infrastructure. For Aave, key metrics include RWA-backed lending growth and whether liquidity returns to prior peaks. For Ethena, the focus is USDe supply relative to established stablecoins. For Hyperliquid, attention centers on whether trading activity and HYPE valuation sustain as competing infrastructure projects emerge.
