Aave's USDG Rollover Plan Faces Yield Shortfall Against Borrowing Costs

Aave's proposed USDG rollover would allow borrowers to transfer stablecoin debt into a new fixed-yield position by moving from October Pendle principal tokens maturing Oct. 29 to replacement tokens maturing Feb. 25, 2027. However, risk analysis indicates the February tokens' on-chain yield currently falls short of multiple borrowing rates on the platform.

According to LlamaRisk's Oct. 8 assessment, the February token's yield of approximately 2.79% trails borrowing costs for USDT0 at 4.48%, USDC at 4.10%, and USDG at 3.67%. GHO borrowing, at 0.93%, remains the only cheaper alternative. An Oct. 10 update showed the gap persisting, with Pendle's implied annual percentage yield at 2.98% compared to Aave's X Layer variable borrowing APYs of 4.12% for USDT0, 5.87% for USDC, and 3.75% for USDG.

How the Rollover Would Work

TokenLogic's proposal would enable a flash-loan transaction that temporarily repays debt, replaces the old collateral, borrows again, and repays the flash loan. OKX would develop the integration separately, with both the Aave listing and OKX integration requiring implementation. A Pendle principal token represents a discounted claim on an underlying asset at maturity, with the purchase discount determining returns for holders through maturity.

Leverage and Returns

The 2.98% annualized yield corresponds to approximately 1.11% gross appreciation over the roughly 137 days to Feb. 25. Borrowing to purchase additional tokens increases exposure to that discount, creating positive carry only when acquired token returns exceed financing costs.

At two times leverage using current borrowing rates, returns on investor equity remain positive for USDT0 and USDG comparisons but turn negative for USDC. At five times leverage, financing costs exceed gross token gains across all three borrowing options. These illustrations exclude rewards, transaction costs, and assume constant borrowing rates through maturity.

Rewards and External Factors

LlamaRisk attributes participating users' profitability to external OKX Exchange Earn incentives and notes that ending such incentives would likely encourage position unwinding. OKX Wallet's bonus program, capped at 2% additional APY, runs through Oct. 28 at 07:00 UTC, with a 490,000 USDT reward pool distributed based on eligible participants' deposit shares. February reward eligibility requires separate terms.

Actual execution costs including 0.05% taker fees, slippage, and network fees can erode thin positive returns. The OKX Wallet product also retains yield tokens separately from displayed position value, requiring separate assessment of total returns.

Migration Constraints

LlamaRisk's recommendation proposes E-Mode 9 with a 91.48% loan-to-value limit and 93.48% liquidation threshold, more restrictive than existing E-Mode 7. As of Oct. 8, LlamaRisk reported 66.03 million October PT units supplied as collateral, while the Oct. 10 Aave display showed 59.79 million October PT units supplied with $61.12 million in total borrowing across the X Layer market.

The February pool held approximately $1.42 million in reported liquidity. A September review found 55.1 million USDT0 debt representing 98.7% of the reviewed cohort's total debt, with a median health factor of 1.03 among top suppliers, indicating minimal liquidation headroom.

Aave's mechanics set October PT loan-to-value to zero after maturity, creating a deadline for borrowers. Whether extending the position proves profitable depends on new entry price, actual funding costs throughout the holding period, leverage levels, and reward eligibility rather than transaction convenience alone.
