Recent data indicates that claims of widespread altcoin outperformance may be driven by a small group of tokens rather than a broad market rally. Crypto trader Denis Liu, known as “VirtualBacon” on X, recently challenged the narrative by comparing altcoin prices across two dates when Bitcoin was trading at nearly identical levels.
The comparison examined prices on August 22, when Bitcoin was at $78,313, and September 9, when it stood at $78,440, marking an essentially flat trend over the 17-day period. Against this baseline, most large altcoins showed minimal movement or slight declines. Ethereum fell 1%, XRP dropped 2%, Dogecoin declined 2%, Tron lost 1%, and Cardano fell 3%. Avalanche was the only major exception among those large caps, registering a 2% gain.
Liu noted that six of the nine largest altcoins remained close to their August 22 levels, suggesting these assets rose alongside Bitcoin before surrendering those gains when BTC stalled. He stated that tokens merely moving with higher volatility than Bitcoin are still fundamentally following Bitcoin's trajectory.
However, the analyst acknowledged exceptions. During the same period, Solana gained 10%, BNB rose 9%, and Chainlink climbed 5%. Liu cautioned that capturing these gains required holding the assets before their respective narratives gained widespread attention, noting that waiting for popular consensus often means entering after the primary move has occurred. As a result, Liu indicated he is currently holding Bitcoin rather than chasing stronger altcoins, emphasizing that perceived altcoin outperformance often boils down to just two or three tokens.
This cautious view contrasts with other perspectives in the market. Analyst Matthew Hyland has argued that over 100 top altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin across multiple timeframes. Hyland pointed to macro-risk indicators turning bullish and altcoin market gauges breaking multi-year downtrends, while also highlighting that altcoin perpetual futures open interest recently surpassed Bitcoin's for the first time since December 2024.
Despite differing broader outlooks, the baseline price check demonstrates that during a period of flat movement for Bitcoin, the majority of the market's largest altcoins showed little overall change.
