U.S. federal debt has grown 40-fold over 45 years, from $1 trillion in 1981 to more than $40 trillion, according to Andrew Hohns, founder and CEO of Battery Finance. In a discussion highlighted by Bitcoin Magazine, Hohns said he does not expect tax increases or spending cuts to solve the problem, and he made the case for a strategic Bitcoin reserve to help defease the national debt.
Hohns also made the case for the Treasury to pilot BitBonds. The conversation covered why BitBonds have not yet come to market and the relationship between higher borrowing costs and the digital credit boom.
Debt growth and bond market pressure
The discussion addressed bond market volatility and the U.S. fiscal outlook, framing the 40x increase in federal debt as a central challenge. Hohns also discussed the potential role of a strategic Bitcoin reserve in addressing the national debt.
Bitcoin-backed lending and real estate
Hohns described Battery Finance's Bitcoin-backed real estate loans and how the loans are designed to avoid margin calls, according to the discussion. The conversation also addressed a $2 trillion real estate refinancing wall and which property types are under pressure.
Institutional adoption and digital credit
The discussion extended to the future of Bitcoin and real estate financing, as well as digital credit and institutional Bitcoin adoption. It also touched on Bitcoin and the midterms.
