Strong U.S. Factory Data Clouds Bitcoin's Rate-Relief Case

Strong U.S. Factory Data Clouds Bitcoin's Rate-Relief Case

U.S. manufacturing activity strengthened in October, with the Institute for Supply Management’s production index rising to 59 from 56.7 in September—the highest since November 2021—according to the report released November 2. The headline manufacturing PMI increased to 55.5 from 54.5, extending expansion to a tenth consecutive month.

The stronger readings arrive as factory cost pressures remained in place but became less widespread. ISM’s prices index fell to 75.2 from 77.9, though October was still the 25th consecutive month of rising raw-material prices.

Diffusion indexes, not output levels

ISM’s figures are diffusion indexes, which measure the breadth of monthly changes across survey respondents. The production milestone reflects a survey reading rather than the physical level of factory output. Similarly, the prices index measures how widespread increases are, not the inflation rate itself.

Bitcoin’s rate outlook remains mixed

For Bitcoin, the data present competing signals. Firmer activity could support appetite for risk, while persistent cost increases could constrain the case for rate relief. Neither channel establishes a price response for Bitcoin.

The rate backdrop was already uncertain after the Federal Reserve held its target range at 3.75%–4% on October 28, citing strong economic activity and elevated inflation. The decision passed 10–2, with Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack preferring a quarter-point increase.

A 2023 IMF working paper found that Fed tightening reduces a common crypto-price factor through the risk-taking channel, meaning changes in investors’ willingness to hold risky assets. That historical finding helps explain why the rate outlook matters for crypto, but it does not determine Bitcoin’s response to the latest manufacturing data.

The next distinction for the rates outlook is whether investors expect borrowing costs to stay high. Firmer expectations for short-term rates would reinforce the restrictive-funding interpretation, while falling yields alongside resilient Bitcoin demand would weaken it.
