The meme coin project Baby Doge announced this week that it has acquired Limewire, the peer-to-peer file-sharing brand that was popular during the early 2000s. The acquisition marks a change of leadership and product direction, with the purchase price remaining undisclosed.
Baby Doge, officially the asset BABYDOGE, was launched in 2021 with similar attributes to dogecoin. The project gained early attention when it was mentioned by Elon Musk on X on July 1, 2021. Today, BABYDOGE has a market cap of $66.48 million and ranks as the 307th largest cryptocurrency by valuation, trading down 94% from its all-time high reached on December 9, 2024.
Limewire, like Napster, was a prominent peer-to-peer file-sharing platform in the early 2000s before legal action forced it offline. The brand was acquired in 2022 by Julian and Paul Zehetmayr, who relaunched it as an NFT marketplace and launched the crypto asset LMWR. The Zehetmayr brothers announced they are handing leadership to Abel Czupor and Baby Doge.
Focus on Decentralization and Creator Control
Czupor envisions Limewire as a decentralized platform where creators retain complete sovereignty over their data and intellectual property. According to the vision outlined, independent artists would be able to leverage AI tools to produce and distribute content directly to fans, potentially bypassing traditional gatekeepers.
Market reaction to the announcement has been muted. Baby Doge declined 9.2% over the week following the news and is down 42.7% year-to-date. Limewire's LMWR token performed worse, falling 22.2% weekly and 64.3% since the start of the year.
