Binance Founder Says $6.3B Hack Unlikely to Severely Impact Bitcoin

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has stated that the $6.3B hack is unlikely to significantly damage Bitcoin's value, citing the relatively small amount of Bitcoin involved in the exploit.

According to Zhao, the Binance hack exposed 18,270 BTC, representing less than 1% of Bitcoin's total supply. He contrasted this with the Mt. Gox hack, which involved 650,000 BTC—approximately 5% of the total supply at the time. Zhao also noted that major past exchange failures like Mt. Gox and FTX affected nearly all users and their assets, whereas the Binance incident has a narrower impact.

Zhao emphasized that market sentiment will depend on whether the affected platform covers losses. Binance has reserved $6.34B to cover the losses and has begun purchasing some of the stolen assets to refund users.

Market Response

Bitcoin initially dropped 4% following the hack announcement, falling from $81,900 to $77,900. At the time of reporting, the price hovered around $77,300, down approximately 6% since the exploit.

Cryptocurrency analyst Anthony Pompliano noted that the market's muted reaction was notable given the size of the hack. He observed that similar breaches in the past have triggered Bitcoin drawdowns of 20% to 40%. Pompliano drew parallels to FTX's collapse in 2022, which marked a cycle bottom around $16,000.

Ryan Watkins, founder of crypto venture capital firm Syncracy Capital, characterized the hack as a reset that cleared excess market leverage. He suggested the incident may have removed remaining market froth in what he described as an early bull market phase.

Technical Indicators

Bitcoin's Open Interest in derivatives dropped to $24B from a recent high of $27B when BTC reached $87,000. Bitcoin remains down 12% from its September peak but has not yet broken below the 200-day moving average at $73,000 or the 50-week moving average at $75,750. Market observers noted that breaking below these levels would signal a return to bear market conditions, though the early bull market setup may remain intact if these support levels hold.
