Bitcoin Advances 23.5% in August as Model Projects Slower September Gains

Bitcoin gained 23.5% in August, trading near $77,700 on August 31, according to CryptoSlate analysis. The cryptocurrency's performance in September is expected to slow considerably, with the platform's price prediction model projecting a 4.7% gain through month-end.

CryptoSlate's forecast model, published at the August 30 close using a reference price of $77,667, projects a median price of $81,319 for September 29. The model maps a broad range of potential outcomes, with an 80th-percentile estimate of $91,049 and a 20th-percentile estimate of $72,502, reflecting significant uncertainty around the central forecast.

The $18,547 gap between the high and low estimates underscores the volatility the model anticipates. Despite the wide distribution, the median sits near the middle of the projected range, suggesting balanced upside and downside risks.

August's rally drew support from multiple sources. CryptoSlate identified $2.23 billion in spot Bitcoin ETF inflows during the month, combined with an 11% decline in futures open positions and near-neutral funding rates. This pattern suggested cash buying drove much of the advance as leveraged positions unwound.

ETF flows, however, showed signs of weakness late in the month. A nine-day streak of US spot Bitcoin ETF inflows totaling approximately $3.04 billion ended with net outflows of $201.9 million on August 28. The reversal marks an important shift from the consistent inflows that supported the earlier climb.

Technical levels provide near-term guidance for the rally's trajectory. Bitcoin's failure to sustain gains above $81,000 has turned $80,000 into a key reclaim level, with immediate support identified around $77,000. Whether Bitcoin holds above $80,000 and whether ETF inflows resume will be critical signals for determining whether spot demand can sustain the advance through September.
