The convergence of Bitcoin and artificial intelligence raises questions about which risks deserve the most attention, according to Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer at the Human Rights Foundation (HRF). In a recent discussion, Gladstein argued that concerns about AI leading to human extinction are largely overblown, and that the genuine threat lies elsewhere.
The real danger from AI, Gladstein contends, is its concentration in the hands of governments, dictators, and large corporations. This centralization poses risks to human freedom and autonomy that warrant focused attention from technologists and policymakers.
To counter this threat, Gladstein champions what he calls the "Freedom Stack," which emphasizes encrypted inference, open-weight models, and local AI—systems that run on individual devices like laptops and phones rather than relying on centralized services. Local AI infrastructure, he suggests, could serve as a significant win for human rights by keeping computational control in users' hands.
The HRF has begun training human rights activists to use AI as part of their work, and has partnered with Bitcoin Park on hackathons for activists focused on building freedom-oriented technology. Gladstein also discussed central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) as tools of financial repression, contrasting them with Bitcoin's decentralized properties and its use as a lifeline in countries experiencing economic instability.
