US spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs recorded their strongest inflow week of 2026 as a sharp cryptocurrency rally drew investors back into funds that had experienced sluggish demand for much of the year. According to SoSoValue data, Bitcoin funds drew $1.918 billion across the five trading sessions through Aug. 21, while Ethereum-holding funds attracted $697.2 million.
The combined $2.6 billion intake marked the strongest performance for the two groups in approximately 10 months. Bitcoin funds registered inflows every trading day of the week, lifting cumulative net subscriptions since their January 2024 debut to $53.7 billion and logging their largest weekly total since October 2025. Ethereum funds similarly posted their best showing since the week ended Oct. 3, 2025.
Macro and Policy Catalysts Drive Demand
The renewed demand coincided with a substantial crypto market rally. Bitcoin climbed from roughly $62,300 to briefly trade near $80,000, while Ethereum reached a seven-month high above $2,500. By press time, prices retraced slightly, with Bitcoin trading near $76,550 and Ethereum around $2,400.
The surge was accompanied by falling Treasury yields, fresh White House engagement, and regulatory initiatives from the SEC and CFTC:
- Treasury Buybacks: On Aug. 19, the US Treasury announced it would double the maximum size of liquidity-support buybacks for long-term securities to at least $4 billion per operation, leading to lower long-term yields and improved conditions for risk assets.
- White House Engagement: President Donald Trump met with crypto executives at the White House and discussed the possibility of the US accumulating large amounts of digital assets.
- Regulatory Proposals: The SEC proposed Regulation Crypto Assets on Aug. 18 to establish a tailored framework for crypto fundraising, while the CFTC convened its Innovation Advisory Committee with industry executives two days later.
Technical Breakout and New Capital
The influx of institutional capital coincided with Bitcoin reclaiming its 200-day moving average and the liquidation of billions of dollars in leveraged short positions. According to research platform Ecoinometrics, the presence of persistent ETF subscriptions indicates that fresh capital is entering the market rather than the price action relying solely on short covering.
Ecoinometrics' ETF-flow model places Bitcoin within a supported range of $67,000 to $78,000, with an estimated fair value near $72,000. While the substantial weekly inflow signals renewed participation, analysts note that sustainable demand moving forward will depend on whether subscriptions remain positive after the market's recent gains.
