Bitcoin and Gold Surge Together as the 'Debasement Trade' Returns

Financial markets experienced heightened volatility as both Bitcoin and gold staged impressive rallies. Bitcoin climbed by $15,000 within a 48-hour period before reaching resistance near $80,000, while gold surged to nearly $4,600 per ounce.

The simultaneous upward movement marks a shift from earlier in the year when both assets struggled at different times. Gold previously peaked at an all-time high of $5,600 in January before dipping below $4,000 per ounce during the summer. Meanwhile, Bitcoin faced rejection at $97,000 in January, slumped to a multi-year low under $58,000 by July 1, and traded sideways above $60,000 before its recent surge.

Analysts at The Kobeissi Letter noted that these moves signal the return of a familiar market trend: investors purchasing scarce assets as protection against currency debasement. Gold has solidified its status as the world's largest financial asset with a market capitalization exceeding $32 trillion, after adding $4.5 trillion in a matter of days. Bitcoin surpassed Tesla to become the 12th-largest financial asset globally, boasting a market cap of $1.550 trillion.

The immediate catalyst for the rallies stems from the US Treasury market. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the government plans to at least double its purchases of long-dated US government debt, increasing buybacks of 10-to-30-year securities to $4 billion or more per operation.

While the statement initially pushed longer-term yields lower, it also exerted pressure on the US dollar amid ongoing concerns regarding the national debt, which recently surpassed $40 trillion. With the budget deficit remaining above 6% of GDP and annual interest expenses running at approximately $1.2 trillion, the dollar dropped 1% to 2% to touch a three-month low. This combination revived the "debasement trade," driving investors toward scarce assets like gold and Bitcoin to hedge against the potential reduction of fiat currency purchasing power.
