Bitcoin Weekly Close Above $80,000

Bitcoin closed the week above $80,000 for the first time since the week of May 11, marking a significant technical milestone. The $80,000 level has proven difficult to sustain, however, with concentrated sell-side liquidity at $80,560 creating resistance that has kept BTC/USD trading in a narrow range.

U.S. Inflation Data and Fed Rate Expectations

This week brings critical U.S. economic data that could influence the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision on September 16. The August Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) are scheduled for release on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Market pricing from the CME Group's FedWatch Tool currently shows 58.4% odds favoring a 0.25% rate hike at the September meeting. This outlook was reinforced by stronger-than-expected August nonfarm payrolls data, which showed 162,000 jobs added compared to a prior estimate of 56,000. A stronger labor market reduces the urgency for the Federal Reserve to ease policy.

August CPI matched expectations at 0.1% month-on-month and 3.4% year-on-year, continuing a trend of softer inflation readings. Despite these numbers, Federal Reserve officials have indicated that current inflation progress alone does not justify a change in policy direction.

Japanese Yen Interventions at Record Levels

Japan's Ministry of Finance reported that foreign reserves decreased by $79.57 billion from late July following record currency interventions aimed at stabilizing the yen. The Japanese currency strengthened to 155 against the U.S. dollar as a result.

Analysis suggests Japan likely sold U.S. Treasuries to fund these interventions, creating potential friction with Washington and complicating the Bank of Japan's ability to act if yen weakness returns. Traders currently price in a 98% probability of a 0.25% interest-rate increase by the BOJ on September 18, with benchmark rates already at their highest level since 1995 at 1.0%.

Crypto markets remain sensitive to USD/JPY movements due to potential longer-term impacts on the yen carry trade and liquidity trends.

Bitcoin Spot Market Participation Remains Weak

Bitcoin's recent price moves have been driven primarily by derivatives traders rather than spot-market participants, according to onchain analytics. Open interest on derivatives exchanges rose from $25.2 billion to $27.53 billion during a single session on September 3, when BTC/USD climbed above $82,000.

CryptoQuant analysis indicates that Bitcoin's realized cap has not kept pace with open interest expansion, suggesting that futures traders are dictating price moves rather than spot-market buyers. Spot demand remains negative on a 30-day rolling basis, with outflows of spot Bitcoin continuing to increase despite the overall price rebound.

Bitcoin requires sustained spot-market participation to exit its current consolidation around $80,000 and establish a meaningful uptrend.

Technical Indicators Signal Potential Trend Shift

Bitcoin's supertrend indicator flipped to a buy signal on Sunday's weekly close, the first time since November 2025. This technical development mirrors the previous bear-market recovery, with the last similar signal occurring in mid-January 2023, two months after Bitcoin's $15,600 bottom.

Liquidity bands identified by onchain analysis suggest resistance concentrated between $83,000 and $86,000, while support holds between $60,000 and $63,000.
