Bitcoin Could Reach $250K–$840K if Financial Advisers Increase Allocations, Research Shows

Bitcoin could reach between $250,000 and $840,000 over the next three to five years under a bullish adoption scenario, according to research from River. The model projects how much capital might flow into bitcoin as institutional portfolios increase their exposure to the asset.

The forecast assumes that 20% to 40% of global portfolios eventually allocate 2% to 4% to bitcoin—a range that aligns with guidance many banks and asset managers already provide to clients. With global financial assets totaling approximately $333 trillion, River estimates this adoption level could bring between $1.3 trillion and $5.3 trillion in new capital into bitcoin.

Current Adoption Levels Remain Low

Institutional adoption of bitcoin remains minimal today. Investment advisers allocate just 0.008% of assets to bitcoin on average, and only about 4% of the global population owns any bitcoin. This gap between current and potential ownership forms the basis for River's projection.

However, adoption is accelerating. The share of financial advisers holding cryptocurrency rose from 22% in 2024 to 32% in 2025, according to the research. An additional 56% of advisers said they plan to add crypto exposure or are considering it. Among the 30 largest U.S. registered investment advisers, 29 now hold bitcoin in some form, though their median allocation remains just 0.10% of assets.

How the Model Calculates Price Impact

River's model uses historical data to estimate how new capital flows affect bitcoin's price. The analysis assumes every $1 of net inflows adds approximately $3 to bitcoin's total market value, based on previous market cycles.

Applying this 3x multiplier to the projected capital inflows of $1.3 trillion to $5.3 trillion would push bitcoin's market value to between $5.5 trillion and $17.5 trillion, translating to a per-coin price of $250,000 to $840,000.

Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins underpins this calculation. Unlike stocks or commodities, no new bitcoin can be created to meet rising demand, concentrating the impact of new capital inflows on the price.

River noted that the forecast depends on adoption trends continuing as described. Slower adoption rates or smaller allocations would produce lower price outcomes.
