Bitcoin Drops Below $80,000 Following Stronger-Than-Expected U.S. Jobs Report

Bitcoin declined significantly on Friday following the release of stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data. The cryptocurrency initially surged to an intraday high of $82,262.21 but reversed course after the jobs report, dropping to nearly $79,800 within minutes and falling below the $80,000 level.

The U.S. nonfarm payrolls report released on August 5 showed the economy created 162,000 jobs, substantially exceeding the median Wall Street forecast of 55,000. The unemployment rate remained flat at 4.1%, while average hourly earnings increased 0.3% for the month and 3.1% over the prior 12 months. The report also included upward revisions of 55,000 jobs for June and July.

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin was trading at $76,795, up 1.64% for the day but down significantly from the 4% gains achieved earlier.

Fed Rate Expectations Drive Market Reaction

The robust labor market data reduced expectations for near-term Federal Reserve stimulus cuts. A strong employment picture gives policymakers flexibility to maintain higher borrowing costs amid elevated inflation, placing downward pressure on riskier assets including cryptocurrencies.

Prediction markets reflected increased odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee meeting, pricing in a 53% probability of a 25-basis point increase, up from 51% the previous week. Rising interest rates typically make fixed-income securities more attractive relative to volatile digital assets like Bitcoin.

Investors are now focused on upcoming U.S. consumer and producer price inflation data and the Fed's policy decision later in the month, with Bitcoin likely to experience volatility as the market adjusts to changing rate expectations.
