Bitcoin's recovery that began in mid-August has encountered significant resistance after driving the asset from under $65,000 to over $82,000 within weeks. CryptoQuant analysts have identified the technical and on-chain levels that will determine whether the rally continues or consolidates.
The $81,700 Threshold
CryptoQuant's weekly report identifies Bitcoin's 365-day moving average, currently at $81,700, as the most critical level for the cryptocurrency. Bitcoin briefly exceeded this level in early September but faced selling pressure that pushed it lower.
Historically, bull markets have confirmed once Bitcoin closes above this moving average. A sustained close above $81,700 could signal the beginning of a new bullish phase and open the door for significant gains. Failure to break through could result in prolonged consolidation or deeper declines.
Resistance Layers Above
Even if Bitcoin clears $81,700, additional resistance awaits. The 3x Metcalfe valuation band sits at $83,600, a level that halted BTC in May and has coincided with important cycle turning points historically.
Beyond $83,600 lies the trader realized-price upper band at $88,700, where selling has historically intensified as active traders accumulate large unrealized profits.
Immediate Supply Pressure
The most pressing obstacle is closer at hand. Long-term holders sold approximately 539,000 bitcoins between $77,100 and $80,200 throughout the year, creating what CryptoQuant describes as the heaviest nearby on-chain supply wall. Bitcoin must absorb this supply before making another convincing attempt upward.
Downside Support Levels
The downside presents clearer definition. The 200-day moving average near $70,000 represents the first major technical support. Below that, a substantial on-chain cluster between $62,000 and $65,000 marks another significant zone where approximately 476,000 bitcoins were accumulated this year.
Outlook
CryptoQuant analysts maintain a bullish stance on Bitcoin, contingent on a critical condition: the asset must clear $81,700 soon, followed by $83,600 and eventually $88,700 for the recovery to develop into a sustained rally.
