Bitcoin Faces Near-Term Headwinds Despite Potential Long-Term Catalysts

Bitcoin's near-term trajectory faces constraints from inflation data, though longer-term conditions may be improving, according to analysis from CoinShares' Head of Research James Butterfill.

Friday's consumer price index report showed core inflation—which excludes food and energy—rose 0.3% in August, exceeding expectations. The stronger-than-expected reading increased the probability of tighter Federal Reserve policy. According to CME's FedWatch tool, traders estimate an 85% chance that interest rates will be higher following the Fed's next meeting.

The inflation print creates a near-term challenge for bitcoin, which historically performs well in low interest rate environments. Butterfill's analysis suggests the stronger inflation data could cap bitcoin below $80,000 in the short term.

However, the longer-term outlook presents a different picture. The U.S. Treasury's expanded bond buyback program, announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in August, has not materially suppressed long-term yields despite doubling in size. If yields remain elevated, pressure may mount on policymakers to escalate to a larger intervention program aimed at forcing borrowing costs lower.

Such action could trigger what analysts describe as a debasement trade, where investors purchase assets to hedge against currency depreciation. Bitcoin and gold have both historically benefited from this dynamic as the dollar weakens.

"The result is therefore a somewhat unusual policy mix for Bitcoin," CoinShares' report stated. The immediate headwind from tighter monetary policy contrasts with potential medium-term support from expanded Treasury intervention, which the report identified as "one of the more powerful medium-term catalysts for Bitcoin."
