Bitcoin falls to $77,000 as rising rates and stablecoin outflows pressure prices

Bitcoin is trading near $77,000, down significantly from its October 2025 peak above $126,000. The decline represents a loss of well over a third of the cryptocurrency's value from its high and has pushed prices back to levels last seen during 2025's low in April, which ranged between $74,500 and $76,300.

The slide reflects macroeconomic pressures rather than crypto-specific turmoil. US headline inflation stood at 3.7% in late 2025, while 10-year Treasury yields hovered around 5%, near multi-decade highs. With rates elevated and the Federal Reserve offering no near-term relief, Bitcoin has behaved like a high-beta asset, declining alongside other risk assets rather than serving as a refuge during market turbulence.

Stablecoin liquidity dries up

A significant factor in Bitcoin's weakness is the sharp decline in stablecoin inflows. ERC-20 stablecoins issued on Ethereum saw inflows drop from approximately $158 billion in August 2025 to $76 billion in later months. Stablecoins serve as on-chain cash for traders and typically fund new Bitcoin purchases, so reduced inflows mean fewer dollars entering the market to buy dips.

The total market value of stablecoins also contracted by around $2 billion in November 2025, signaling broader cooling in market activity beyond Bitcoin alone.

ETF flows turn negative

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, which helped drive the prior rally through strong institutional demand, have shifted from inflows to outflows. On certain days during the recent decline, daily outflows exceeded $600 million. Long-term holders have also been liquidating positions, taking profits after the cryptocurrency roughly doubled over 12 months and climbed 350% over two years.

What to watch

The April 2025 support level between $74,500 and $76,300 remains critical. Whether Bitcoin holds above this zone or breaks lower could determine market sentiment in the coming weeks. Additionally, stabilization or reversal of ETF outflows would signal a return of institutional appetite, while continued heavy outflows would suggest buyers remain cautious about near-term prospects.
