Bitcoin Holds $80,000 Despite Geopolitical Tensions and Hawkish Fed Signals

Bitcoin has maintained a position near $80,000 this week despite a confluence of headwinds that typically pressure risk assets. The cryptocurrency reached $82,400 earlier in the week but has since pulled back, yet analysts note its resilience is noteworthy given current conditions.

The macro environment presents multiple challenges. Geopolitical tensions escalated over the weekend as Iran's Revolutionary Guard launched ballistic missiles at US Navy vessels, followed by US strikes on Iranian crude oil carriers and Iranian targeting of tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. These developments pushed Brent crude toward $100 per barrel, raising inflation concerns that complicate monetary policy decisions ahead.

The Federal Reserve adds another layer of pressure. Chair Kevin Warsh adopted a notably hawkish stance at Jackson Hole, stating that inflation remains too high and the Fed could still have work to do. This rhetoric strengthened expectations for a September rate hike, which rose to 65% at their peak following Friday's employment data.

The August jobs report showed the US economy added 162,000 positions, nearly triple the expected 56,000, while unemployment held steady at 4.1%. Although economically positive, the stronger-than-expected data reduced hopes for monetary easing and pressured risk assets broadly. The two-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since January 2025, the dollar strengthened, and stocks came under pressure.

Bitcoin initially dropped $3,000 following the deteriorating conditions but rebounded swiftly. Over the past month, the cryptocurrency has gained roughly 25%, and it remains near $80,000 even as geopolitical tensions renewed over the weekend.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs have continued attracting significant inflows, with Thursday seeing over $730 million enter the funds—the highest single-day level since January. Notably, gold has surrendered much of its mid-August rally gains, while Bitcoin has held stronger.

Two significant events loom in the near term. The Consumer Price Index arrives on September 11, with a hotter-than-expected reading potentially reinforcing rate hike expectations amid rising oil prices. The Federal Reserve's policy decision concludes on September 16, where rate increases and hawkish guidance could test key Bitcoin support levels.
