Bitcoin held price levels near $83,700 on Wednesday as market leverage continued to clear and futures open interest fell to its lowest level since March.
Approximately $53 billion in bitcoin futures open interest is now distributed across major exchanges, with Binance leading at $11.01 billion (20.77% of the market) and CME holding $8.46 billion (15.96%). The total represents a significant decline from peaks exceeding $90 billion recorded last year.
Leverage Reduction Creates Setup for Price Movement
Bitfinex analysts said in a note to Bitcoin.com News that aggressive betting and borrowed money have substantially left the bitcoin market. Implied volatility sits close to a one-year low, and exchange-traded fund inflows have slowed to roughly match the pace of new bitcoin issuance.
The analysts noted that historically, this combination of contracting open interest paired with compressed futures premiums has supported price action. "Since 2022, elevated futures settlement ratios paired with compressed carry have preceded a median 30-day gain of 8.9 percent," Bitfinex wrote. "If current basis rates persist and open interest remains flat, the historical patterns suggest that bitcoin could continue to appreciate."
The Bitfinex team identified a cost basis band between $82,500 and $84,000 as a potential deciding factor for the next move. They noted that a reclaim of $85,000 would return roughly 760,000 BTC held between $84,000 and $85,000 to profit.
Options Market Shows Call Dominance
Bitcoin calls represent 60.88% of options open interest, with options open interest standing around $36 billion. Deribit's October 30 expiry shows the $95,000 call leading positions with 23,350.8 BTC in open interest, followed by $90,000 and $100,000 calls.
Max-pain levels—the price at which option holders would collect the least at expiration—sit substantially below current spot prices across major platforms: approximately $76,000 on Deribit, $79,000 on Binance, and $80,000 on OKX for October 30 expiry. December max-pain levels remain similarly depressed.
Exchange Futures Activity Remains Divided
Twenty-four-hour changes in futures open interest showed mixed directional flow across exchanges. Binance's open interest rose 2.10% and CME gained 1.41%, while Bybit lost 2.54% and OKX shed 1.89%. BingX posted a larger 37.34% increase to $918.61 million. Four-hour data, however, showed contraction across Binance, CME, Bybit, and OKX, indicating the absence of uniform expansion across timeframes.
CME's options book has shrunk considerably from late 2025 levels, with recent totals falling from roughly 11,000 contracts to around 6,000 as the nearest expiration approaches.
