Bitcoin Leverage Cools After $82K Retest; Miners Show Neutral Positioning

Bitcoin's rebound toward $82,000 attracted renewed leverage into derivatives markets, though momentum has moderated. Binance Open Interest jumped nearly 8% within 24 hours and briefly exceeded $10 billion as the move higher drew speculative positioning.

BTC-denominated open interest climbed to 125,830 BTC, confirming traders opened fresh positions rather than benefiting solely from higher prices. This speculative increase pushed Binance's overall open interest dominance to 37.1%, concentrating leverage on a single exchange capable of amplifying price movements through liquidations.

After Bitcoin fell below $80,000, Binance's open interest cooled to $9.67 billion, suggesting some unwinding of excess leverage already occurred. This reset may improve the rally's structure by reducing liquidation risk, though futures demand alone cannot sustain recovery.

Spot buying strength combined with stable open interest levels would provide healthier confirmation for a sustained move higher. If futures demand increases without spot participation, Bitcoin may remain vulnerable to sharp reversals.

Miner Activity Remains Neutral

Miners show little urgency to sell into the recovery. The Miners' Position Index sits near neutral at -0.036, well below the 2.0 level typically seen during large-scale transfers. The metric briefly surged toward 2.8 in August before quickly retracing to 1, suggesting a distribution spike failed to develop into sustained pressure.

The indicator has since fluctuated around zero, showing miners are neither aggressively selling nor accumulating through exchange transfers. Persistent neutral positioning would support price stabilization, while any sustained move above 2.0 could introduce fresh supply pressure.

Bitcoin-Gold Correlation Shifts

Bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold has climbed toward +0.50, more than doubling from early-2026 levels and approaching its 2020 peak. Meanwhile, correlation with the Nasdaq has fallen toward +0.30, indicating Bitcoin is moving less closely with technology-driven risk appetite.

This divergence suggests investors are increasingly treating Bitcoin as a monetary hedge similar to gold, responding to concerns around liquidity and currency debasement. However, correlation alone cannot establish lasting demand. Sustained spot market participation would be needed to validate and reinforce this hedge narrative.
