Bitcoin Options Worth $15.6 Billion Set to Expire Friday

Bitcoin options totaling approximately $15.6 billion in notional value are set to expire on Deribit early Friday. According to Deribit's strike-by-strike breakdown, the expiring contracts represent roughly 182,000 BTC split between 106,200 calls and 75,900 puts.

A call option gives buyers the right to purchase Bitcoin at a set price by a set date, while a put allows holders to sell at that price. The put-to-call ratio of 0.71 indicates more calls than puts—a positioning that reflects expectations for price increases.

The notional $15.6 billion figure represents the value of Bitcoin the contracts cover, not actual cash changing hands on Friday.

Max Pain and Strike Concentration

Options traders watch a metric called max pain—the price at which the largest share of contracts expire worthless. Deribit's dashboard places Friday's max pain at $76,000, roughly $9,000 below Bitcoin's price near $85,000. Historically, max pain has shown mixed results as a price predictor.

The most concentrated strike by far is $70,000, where Deribit data shows both the largest call position (8,705 BTC) and the largest put position (7,653 BTC). On the call side, the next-heaviest positions sit at $90,000 (7,222 BTC) and $100,000 (6,950 BTC). The largest remaining put concentrations cluster at $60,000 (5,571 BTC) and $75,000 (4,257 BTC).

Hedging Dynamics and Market Tests

Options dealers who sold these contracts must hedge their exposure by buying or selling real Bitcoin as prices move. When a dealer is short a call and prices rise, they typically purchase Bitcoin to maintain their hedge, adding momentum to an ongoing rally. Once contracts expire, that hedging flow disappears or rolls into the next expiration cycle.

Friday's expiration is not the only market test on the calendar. U.S. durable goods orders and the University of Michigan's final September consumer sentiment reading both release within hours of the options expiry. CME Bitcoin futures also settle the same day, with Deribit's settlement occurring at 8:00 UTC and CME's at 15:00 UTC.

The Federal Reserve raised its target rate range to 3.75 percent to 4.00 percent on September 16, making any economic data surprises particularly relevant for rate-sensitive assets like Bitcoin.
