Bitcoin's recent price momentum faces renewed pressure following reports of escalating tensions in the Middle East. After surging past $87,000 during the business week, the cryptocurrency has pulled back to $84,000.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal citing officials familiar with the matter, US President Donald Trump has rejected a recent peace proposal from Iran. The proposal, raised at the United Nations General Assembly and transmitted via Qatari mediators, suggested a seven-day ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and an end to regional attacks.
The rejection contrasts with comments Trump made weeks prior, when he stated the conflict would end immediately after the midterm elections. Sources indicated that Trump has instead told people close to him that he expects to restart bombing after the midterms.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had previously stated that everything was prepared for a deal if the US showed seriousness. The seven-month conflict has continued to disrupt oil flows and affect the global economy.
Geopolitical developments between the US and Iran have consistently impacted bitcoin's price since the conflict began in late February. Most recently, a prior round of US attacks and Iranian retaliation halted an ascent at $82,000, causing a quick retreat. While bitcoin had previously risen $20,000 since mid-August, the latest rejection of the ceasefire proposal and potential for renewed military action threaten to further impact its market progress.
