Researchers Propose Private Bitcoin Transfers Without Consensus Changes

Researchers led by Clara Shikheman have proposed a method to enable private Bitcoin transfers without requiring changes to the network's consensus layer, according to a proposal from Alloc Init.

The approach would leverage mixer logic similar to Tornado Cash, allowing users to deposit Bitcoin into private encrypted notes. Transactions would then be shielded using zero-knowledge proofs, which conceal the sender, receiver, and transaction amount. Users receive a new address upon withdrawal.

Shikheman stated that the proposal requires "no soft forks, no bridges, no operators, just Bitcoin," emphasizing the approach's direct application to the existing network. Eli Ben-Sasson, founder of Starknet and a pioneer in zero-knowledge proof technology, endorsed the direction, noting it aligns with the original intent of the Zerocash whitepaper to bring privacy to Bitcoin.

Privacy and Security Considerations

Public blockchains are inherently transparent, allowing anyone with an internet connection to track transactions and wallet balances. This openness has driven some users toward privacy-focused alternatives like Zcash, which offers shielded pools.

Beyond privacy preferences, the lack of transaction confidentiality can create security vulnerabilities. Kidnappings and extortion attempts targeting cryptocurrency holders have increased in frequency, with data breaches exposing fund balances and transaction histories.

Caution From Researchers

However, skepticism exists about the proposal's maturity. Researcher Robin Linus cautioned that "the cryptography underlying this approach is still highly experimental, and its security assumptions are far from established."

Additional concerns have been raised about whether the approach would be resistant to quantum computing threats. Despite these reservations, proponents view the proposal as a meaningful step toward addressing Bitcoin's privacy limitations, though widespread implementation may require further development and verification.
