Bitcoin has rebounded approximately 40% from its late-June low, reigniting debate over the state of the market cycle. The cryptocurrency fell briefly below $58,000 in late June before climbing past $81,000.
In episode 117 of the WuBlockchain Podcast published September 2, 2026, investor didier and portfolio manager Griffin Ardern presented conflicting views on the rally's significance.
Differing Interpretations of the Rally
didier characterized the move as the opening phase of a new bull market, citing Bitcoin's reclamation of its 200-day moving average as the clearest signal. "My view is very clear: this is a bull market, either in its opening phase or very early stages," he said.
Griffin disagreed, stating that the bear market remains in its middle-to-late stages with distance left before a true bull market begins. He attributed the rally to a short squeeze following weeks of thin trading and compressed options volatility.
Both guests acknowledged that the market had been broadly underweight or short before the rally began. Fiscal credibility concerns also drove capital toward Bitcoin, with Griffin flagging rising Treasury bill issuance as a credit risk.
Liquidity and Yield Conditions
didier noted that funding costs above 5% are difficult to sustain given the current debt load. As yields approach 4.7% to 5%, he expects investors to build positions early. Griffin maintained that a true bull market requires clearer liquidity and Treasury signals before the bear phase concludes.
Strategy's Role in Market Dynamics
Discussion centered on Strategy, a corporate Bitcoin holder led by Michael Saylor, as a potential factor in sustaining momentum. didier clarified that STRC, one of Strategy's preferred-stock products, is perpetual preferred stock rather than traditional debt, easing forced-default concerns.
Strategy carries approximately $6.7 billion in convertible bonds, with some entering repayment windows this year. Cash reserves are growing through stock sales and preferred issuance to address this maturity pressure.
Griffin noted that Bitcoin increasingly trades as a standalone macro asset, meaning difficulties at Strategy would not necessarily reverse the rally or confirm the bear market's return.
Capital Rotation Considerations
Both guests examined whether capital rotating out of artificial intelligence could extend Bitcoin's rebound. didier observed that many AI-focused investors are reassessing positioning and considering cryptocurrency reallocation, though few currently hold meaningful crypto exposure.
didier suggested that short-term capital cannot tolerate prolonged underperformance as long-term capital can. Crypto positioning is now clean after heavy liquidations, potentially creating opportunities if AI corrects while alternative assets rise.
Griffin acknowledged that AI has drawn talent from crypto development, but noted that crypto has continued making progress in payments, trading, compliance, and risk management since 2020.
