Bitcoin Spot Demand Turns Negative as Retail Investors Sell Into Price Rallies

Bitcoin's apparent demand metric returned to negative territory around September 1, according to CryptoQuant data, ending a brief improvement during August. The reading indicates that existing Bitcoin supply flowing onto the market from dormant wallets is overwhelming new buying interest.

The demand metric had been negative for 208 consecutive days through June 26, with lows reaching approximately -273,000 BTC. Even with a brief improvement in August, the return to negative readings in September suggests an underlying structural issue persists.

Retail Selling Pressure Intensifies

Retail investors are taking profits instead of accumulating Bitcoin. Wallets holding under 10 BTC have shown a negative accumulation trend score of -0.982 since early August 2026. On a scale where -1 represents maximum distribution, this reflects significant retail selling behavior.

Short-term holders have been realizing profits at elevated rates during price recoveries, adding selling pressure at moments when sustained buying would be needed to push through resistance levels.

Institutional Demand Remains Weak

The Coinbase Premium Index, which compares Coinbase prices to other exchanges, remained negative for 78 consecutive days. A negative premium indicates that buyers on the platform most associated with institutional and US-based trading are consistently bidding below global market prices.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs have experienced significant capital outflows. While some larger holders have accumulated during periods of weakness, their buying has not been consistent or aggressive enough to offset the combined weight of retail selling and ETF outflows.
