Bitcoin pushed past $87,000 on Monday, igniting a sharp reversal in market sentiment. The rally triggered a surge in bullish positioning, with fear-of-missing-out (FOMO) reaching levels not seen since late 2024, according to sentiment analysis platform Santiment.
A $648 million liquidation of bearish positions within 24 hours provided immediate buying pressure. Crypto trading volume jumped 39% during the move, and open interest across the market rose 7.6% to $156 billion despite the mass short squeeze, suggesting traders were rapidly opening new positions rather than reducing exposure.
Santiment cautioned that extreme optimism can signal warning signs when sentiment becomes heavily one-sided. While the shift from fear to FOMO does not guarantee a price reversal, the rapid swing underscores rising trader confidence following Bitcoin's latest advance.
Technical Levels and Analyst Targets
Bitcoin recently cleared the 50-week moving average, positioned around $78,700. Analyst Doctor Profit identified $88,000 as the next major resistance level if Bitcoin sustains momentum. Glassnode noted that Bitcoin remains in a bullish regime while trading above both the True Market Mean and short-term holder cost basis, levels historically associated with sustained uptrends.
Some analysts project significantly higher targets based on longer-term patterns. The Long Investor outlined a Wave 5 target of $350,000 by 2030, while another analyst pointed to a historical 364-day cycle pattern between market peaks and bottoms, suggesting a potential next level around $370,000.
