BlackRock Attributes Bitcoin’s Steep Pullback to Deleveraging and Flows

Asset manager BlackRock has reaffirmed Bitcoin's role as a portfolio diversifier and emerging monetary alternative following a sharp market downturn. According to the firm, the recent sell-off stems from extreme speculative positioning and flow shifts rather than any fundamental change in Bitcoin's long-term trajectory.

Bitcoin experienced significant price swings, surging to all-time highs above $120,000 in October 2025 before retracing by more than 50% to fall below $60,000 by June 2026. Prior to the decline, futures open interest surpassed $90 billion, driven heavily by leveraged offshore perpetual contracts. A macro risk-off event, sparked by China tariff headlines, subsequently triggered massive liquidations, including a record single-day drop of $20 billion in open interest.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) also saw shifting dynamics, drawing $60 billion in inflows between January 2024 and October 2025, followed by more than $5 billion in outflows as capital rotated into artificial intelligence-themed products. BlackRock stated that the sell-off functioned as idiosyncratic deleveraging and flow dynamics, leaving the core investment case unchanged.

BlackRock's updated trailing 10-year analysis indicates that Bitcoin maintains a low long-term correlation to traditional assets alongside positively skewed returns. A modest allocation of 1% to 2% has historically enhanced risk-adjusted performance within a traditional 60/40 portfolio.

The firm noted that although leverage in perpetual futures created temporary volatility spikes, Bitcoin's overall volatility has trended downward over the past decade alongside a maturing market structure. With speculative excess largely cleared from the market, BlackRock expects Bitcoin's risk correlation to normalize toward its historical record as a low-correlation diversifier.
