Summer Mersinger is stepping down as CEO of the Blockchain Association, one of the cryptocurrency industry's leading advocacy groups. The transition comes days after the sector experienced a major legislative setback with the rejection of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in the U.S. Senate.
Mersinger will be replaced on an interim basis by Kristin Smith, the organization's original CEO who led the association from its founding in 2018 until 15 months ago. The handover is scheduled for October 16.
The timing reflects a turbulent period for the advocacy group. While the Blockchain Association achieved significant wins in Washington, including the passage of the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act, it faced a significant defeat when the Senate failed to advance the Clarity Act. All Senate Democrats and some Republicans declined to support the measure.
Mersinger, who took the CEO role after leaving her position at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, highlighted the organization's accomplishments during her tenure. "I'm proud of how far we've come together, from the GENIUS Act to real regulatory clarity at the SEC and CFTC," she said in a statement.
Smith had left the Blockchain Association last year to become president of the Solana Policy Institute but retained her position as the association's board chair. She will maintain her SPI role while taking on the interim CEO responsibilities at the Blockchain Association.
