Mike McGlone, Senior Commodity Strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, has raised concerns about the cryptocurrency market's near-term prospects, citing poor performance and elevated volatility since 2017 compared to broader financial markets.
McGlone highlighted that the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index (BGCI), which tracks major USD-traded digital assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, Cardano, Chainlink, and Stellar, has underperformed while remaining roughly four times as volatile as wider market indices.
Fed Policy Shift and Market Conditions
McGlone attributed the challenging conditions partly to the Federal Reserve's shift toward a hawkish monetary policy stance. He noted that the Fed is expected to implement at least one additional rate hike in 2026 as it works to combat inflation.
The analyst contrasted current conditions with 2021, when significant liquidity entered financial markets during the COVID-19 pandemic response and the Federal Reserve maintained a more accommodative policy position. He described this period as enabling substantial gains across crypto and other investment categories.
Valuation Pressures and Correlated Risk
McGlone pointed to stretched valuations in the broader stock market, noting that U.S. stock-market capitalization has reached levels not seen in roughly a century relative to GDP and about a quarter-century relative to public debt.
Because the BGCI tracks highly correlated with the S&P 500 while exhibiting greater volatility, McGlone characterized the index as facing a challenging scenario. He also noted that survivor bias affects the index amid the presence of tens of thousands of cryptocurrencies in the broader market, suggesting concentrated exposure creates additional risk dynamics.
