Bank of New York Mellon has expanded its digital asset services in Europe, offering regulated custody to select institutional clients under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The announcement came on October 8 in Brussels.
BNY's European banking entity, Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, joined the European Securities and Markets Authority MiCA register in July 2026. This registration enables the bank to provide custody, administration, and transfer services for crypto-assets to clients operating in one of the world's largest regulated markets for digital assets.
Platform Capabilities and Security
The BNY Digital Asset Custody platform, launched in 2022, currently supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and USD Coin. The company plans to expand support to broader crypto-assets and stablecoins.
The platform is built on security infrastructure including multiparty computation technology, segregated client wallets, and private key storage. These controls are designed to support risk management and security across the service.
According to Emily Portney, Global Head of Asset Servicing at BNY, the platform integrates with the firm's existing asset servicing expertise and controls, allowing clients to align operations with digital strategies across the full asset lifecycle.
Market Opportunity
Jennifer Barker, Head of Europe at BNY, cited growing institutional interest in digital assets. She noted that banks and broker-dealers are expanding crypto-asset and stablecoin offerings, while asset managers and corporate treasurers are exploring digital payments and tokenized securities.
Barker stated that institutions require solutions with institutional-grade resilience, oversight, and safeguards comparable to traditional financial operations.
