Boros, the funding-rate trading protocol associated with Pendle, officially launched its native spread markets on October 15, 2026. The first batch covers ETH and BTC, using funding rates from Hyperliquid and Gate.
The new spread markets package funding rate gaps into a single tradeable instrument, allowing traders to take a position on whether the funding difference between exchanges will widen or narrow without executing multiple transactions or managing separate collateral commitments on each leg.
How Spread Markets Work
Perpetual futures use periodic funding payments between long and short traders to keep contract prices aligned with underlying assets. These funding rates float and often differ meaningfully across exchanges.
Before this launch, capturing the spread between venues required opening offsetting positions on multiple exchanges, hedging price exposure, and posting collateral in multiple places—a complex 4-leg strategy that effectively limited participation to well-capitalized players with established infrastructure.
Boros's spread markets simplify this by making the cross-exchange gap directly tradeable, removing the operational complexity that previously gated the opportunity.
Trading Volume and Historical Performance
Boros built spread markets on the foundation of its existing single-venue funding-rate markets, which use a product called Yield Units, or YUs. By mid-2026, Boros had processed over $20 billion in notional trading volume across more than 170 distinct markets.
Historical funding averages show meaningful gaps between venues. For example, Hyperliquid's ETH funding rates have run several percentage points above Binance's.
Depending on leverage and exchange pairing, certain strategies have produced fixed APRs ranging from 5% to over 35%. Users running 4-leg arbitrage setups have locked in fixed yields of approximately 25-35% APR, while short-dated positions have reached yields of 43-49% APR in select trading scenarios.
Market Impact and Outlook
By making funding gaps directly tradeable, spread markets expand access to the strategy beyond traders with the infrastructure to build multi-leg positions. This is anticipated to bring more liquidity and trading efficiency to crypto derivatives markets.
Funding gaps have been fairly consistent historically, but if gaps between venues narrow or flip, positions betting on them will face losses. As more capital chases the same spread, the spread itself may compress.
Notably, Boros is not launching a new token alongside the product and remains focused purely on on-chain funding-rate trading.
