Canton Foundation Partners with Meritz Securities to Explore Tokenized Korean Assets

South Korean investment firm Meritz Securities has struck a partnership with the Canton Foundation to explore bringing tokenized Korean financial assets into international institutional markets. The memorandum of understanding was signed on October 15.

The agreement targets three areas of cooperation: converting domestic financial assets into blockchain-based tokens under Korea's developing regulatory framework, examining Canton's privacy-enabled infrastructure for institutional financial transactions, and investigating cross-border applications involving tokenized sovereign-grade debt.

Tokenization and Collateral Infrastructure

The partnership aims to explore using digital representations of high-quality debt instruments as collateral across borders. Tokenization of real-world assets offers a potential mechanism for transferring and coordinating those assets across participating financial platforms, though the announcement describes exploratory initiatives rather than completed transactions or operational products.

Canton's Institutional Network

Canton, developed by Digital Asset, operates as a public blockchain designed to accommodate institutional privacy requirements. Its ecosystem reportedly includes more than 1,000 institutions, with 62 major organizations serving as Super Validators.

Meritz Securities, founded in 1973, reported 8.35 trillion won in standalone shareholders' equity as of June 2026, ranking fourth domestically by that measure. The firm commands approximately KRW 65-73 trillion in assets, equivalent to $48.3 to $54.3 billion.

The announcement follows a separate transaction completed on Canton involving S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko, Derivnex, DRW, and Marex, which executed a privately negotiated total return swap using a tokenized benchmark. The Meritz agreement, by contrast, outlines potential applications awaiting further development, with practical outcomes dependent on Korea's regulatory decisions and eventual institutional participation.
