TapTools has scrapped a community NFT sale intended to support its revival as a Cardano analytics platform, following widespread negative reaction from users. All participants received full refunds.
The platform had shut down in June after four years of operation. The team cited the departure of two co-founders, including its CTO and COO, as well as infrastructure, development, and support costs as reasons it could no longer continue responsibly.
On September 2, TapTools announced its return, stating that thousands of users had requested ways to help restore the platform. The team positioned the revival as "Phase One" of bringing the service back online.
The announcement included a limited NFT sale of 777 pieces priced at 777 ADA each. Community members quickly expressed disapproval on social media, with some characterizing the offering as "extractive" and others questioning its legitimacy.
TapTools acknowledged the misstep in a subsequent statement. "We got this one wrong," the team wrote, explaining that it had misread community sentiment regarding how the sale would be received as a funding mechanism.
Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, responded to TapTools' apology by sharing a South Park parody clip referencing corporate apologies, without additional commentary.
The cancellation of the NFT sale leaves TapTools facing the challenge of rebuilding user trust as it seeks to restore its analytics services to the Cardano network.
