Cardano (ADA) registered a 20% price increase over a seven-day period leading up to August 27, coinciding with a shift toward extreme greed in the broader cryptocurrency market following Bitcoin's move to $80,000. Despite the upward price movement, the rally has drawn skepticism regarding the underlying fundamentals of the network.
Analyst Questions Rally Amid Weak Fundamentals
Speaking in an interview with the Wolf of All Streets, Zero Knowledge founder Austin Campbell questioned the justification for Cardano's gains, suggesting the rise may be driven by low liquidity rather than fundamental valuation.
“Something that has no utility and no fundamental way to value it is maybe an easy fade, because it just caught a bid in the nonsense and went up more because there was zero liquidity on it,” Campbell stated.
Declining DeFi Activity and Monthly Revenue
On-chain data indicates a contraction in Cardano's decentralized finance ecosystem. According to DeFiLlama, the Total Value Locked (TVL) on Cardano decreased from 509 million ADA on January 1, 2026, to 272 million ADA, marking a drop of 237 million ADA over the course of 2026.
Additionally, decentralized exchange (DEX) volumes fell sharply from $56 million on August 22 to $965,000, representing a 98% decline over five days. TokenTerminal data further indicates that monthly network revenues dropped from $20,000 in January 2026 to $8,000 in August 2026. These metrics precede the planned Dijkstra upgrade, scheduled for a first-phase rollout in the fourth quarter of 2026 to enhance network speed and security.
Derivatives and Market Sentiment
Derivatives data from CoinGlass shows that Cardano’s open interest declined from $582.14 million on August 22 to $485.32 million, following $18 million in liquidations between August 22 and August 27. A long/short ratio of 0.89 indicates that short sellers are currently dominating the futures market as traders take profits. Futures trading volumes also decreased by 15% to $434 million.
Technical Outlook
As of August 27, Cardano traded at $0.212, maintaining an ascending channel despite the declining network activity. Technical indicators show a positive and rising MACD line, suggesting near-term bullish momentum.
Key technical levels to monitor include:
- Resistance: A move above the upper trendline could target the 200-day exponential moving average at $0.24.
- Support: The midline of the rising channel at $0.19 coincides with the 100-day EMA, serving as a critical threshold where a breakdown could shift the mid-term trend from bullish to bearish.
