Cathie Wood Says Bitcoin Still Has 'Miles to Go' After Breaking Out Against Gold

ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood has restated her institutional thesis on Bitcoin, highlighting the asset's recent outperformance against gold as a meaningful signal for long-term allocators.

During ARK's September "In The Know" episode, Wood described Bitcoin as three overlapping revolutions: a technology platform, a new global monetary system, and the first asset of an entirely new class. Because those foundations remain early-stage, she said Bitcoin still has "miles to go."

The Gold Ratio Breakout

Wood's analysis hinges on the Bitcoin-to-gold ratio. Historically, gold has tended to rally ahead of Bitcoin's bull runs, as seen in the 2020–21 and 2024–25 cycles. Now, Wood sees the relationship shifting.

She characterized Bitcoin's recent move versus gold as "very reassuring," noting that the correlation between the two assets is unusually low by historical standards. Gold had outperformed Bitcoin by a wide margin through most of the year, with prediction markets pricing only a ~23% chance that Bitcoin would beat gold in 2026.

The significance of the ratio breakout is underscored by the backdrop: gold's safe-haven bid had kept metal prices elevated even as Bitcoin gained ground, suggesting underlying demand for the cryptocurrency independent of macro risk-off flows.

Institutional Accumulation Accelerates

Major institutional players have continued building positions. MicroStrategy resumed its accumulation strategy with a 4,603 BTC purchase worth $370 million, bringing its total holdings to 845,050 BTC. CEO Michael Saylor indicated the company was "back" in its buying cycle.

On the ETF side, Bitcoin whales moved $5 billion into BlackRock Bitcoin ETFs through tax-deferred in-kind swaps. Spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed roughly $924 million in the past week alone, even after a Friday outflow.

ARK itself added positions in Robinhood and a Solana staking ETF during recent market weakness. The firm also loaded Block and Circle, and joined MicroStrategy, BlackRock, and Coinbase in a Bitcoin security consortium focused on reinforcing the network's infrastructure.

Dual Asset Nature

Wood framed Bitcoin as "both a risk-off and a risk-on asset," a dual role that distinguishes it from traditional equities and gold. This positioning underpins her view that Bitcoin serves purposes beyond conventional asset classifications.

ARK has previously set a bull-case Bitcoin target of $1.5 million, with a base case of $730,000 by 2030. That base case was not updated in the recent episode.

Risks Ahead

Bitcoin's performance remains sensitive to macroeconomic conditions. The asset tumbled after August employment data came in stronger than expected, demonstrating how quickly macro headwinds can overwhelm institutional demand. If real rates remain elevated and gold continues to absorb the insurance trade, the ratio breakout Wood is tracking could stall.
