Citigroup and Coinbase Partner to Simplify Stablecoin Infrastructure for Businesses

Citigroup and Coinbase announced Monday that they are partnering to streamline stablecoin infrastructure for business clients. The collaboration will allow companies to convert between traditional money and stablecoins through a single integrated system, eliminating the need to build and manage separate banking and cryptocurrency platforms.

The partnership consists of two main components. First, Coinbase Virtual Accounts, built on Citi's banking-as-a-service platform, will provide Coinbase's payments customers with bank-account-like features for accepting, holding, and sending funds. Citi will supply the regulated banking infrastructure to automatically convert incoming fiat currency to stablecoins. Second, Citi's merchant platform Spring by Citi will integrate Coinbase's infrastructure, enabling Citi's enterprise clients to accept stablecoin payments at checkout. Coinbase will handle the conversion back to fiat, and Citi will settle the funds, so merchants avoid directly holding or managing cryptocurrency.

The announcement reflects a broader trend of traditional banks integrating blockchain technology into their operations. Citi announced last month that it would allow institutional investors to custody both traditional assets and bitcoin within a single framework later this year, rather than requiring separate systems.

Debopama Sen, Head of Payments Services at Citi, stated that the company aims to deliver solutions for clients operating in a complex global economy. Alec Lovett, Coinbase's Head of Infrastructure Product, noted that the partnership provides fintechs building on Coinbase with a compliant bridge between fiat and stablecoins at scale.

Citi and Coinbase first announced their partnership last year to enhance digital asset payment capabilities for institutional clients. Citi also operates Citi Token Services, which enables real-time cross-border payments using tokenized deposits. The bank has additionally been collaborating with other major financial institutions—including Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America—to explore stablecoin issuance since last year.
