Coinbase announced on October 7, 2026, that it has completed its integration of Deribit, the options platform acquired for approximately $2.9 billion in August 2025. The result is the Coinbase Global Exchange, a new platform designed to connect eligible US traders to global derivatives liquidity through a regulated channel.
The platform operates through Coinbase Financial Markets, a subsidiary regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a futures commission merchant. In May 2026, the CFTC issued guidance establishing Coinbase Financial Markets as the first US-regulated FCM able to connect US clients directly to global derivatives markets.
How the Platform Works
The Coinbase Global Exchange features a single collateral pool, allowing traders to use one deposit to back positions across multiple products. This structure enables capital to be deployed more efficiently compared to separate margin requirements for each trading venue.
On October 1, 2026, perpetual futures previously trading on Coinbase International Exchange migrated to the new Deribit-powered gateway. Perpetual futures are futures contracts with no expiry date and are widely used for leveraged crypto trading.
Rollout Timeline
Access will expand in stages:
- Institutional options and perpetual futures access: expected within weeks of the announcement
- Non-US options access: planned after the institutional launch
- US retail options: expected later in 2026
Coinbase plans to add spot margin and unified portfolio features to the platform. The company also committed to relaunching its Pro platform for professional traders by the end of 2026.
Liquidity Metrics
As of September 30, 2026, Bitcoin options open interest on the platform totaled $30 billion. Deribit processed more than $1 trillion in trading volume in the year before the integration. Derivatives have historically accounted for approximately 80 percent of total crypto trading volume.
Regulatory Context
The integration follows May 2026 CFTC guidance that established the regulatory framework for US-regulated FCMs to connect clients to global derivatives markets. Approximately 14 months passed between Coinbase's acquisition of Deribit in August 2025 and the full integration in October 2026. The arrangement depends on the continuation of CFTC guidance, which can be revised.
