Coinbase reported third-quarter net income of $719 million, a 66% increase from $433 million in the same period last year, according to its October 29 earnings report. However, total revenue declined 35% year over year to approximately $1.22 billion, reflecting continued pressure on the exchange's core trading business.
Prediction Markets Drive New Revenue
Prediction markets emerged as a significant growth driver for Coinbase in Q3. The company reported that annualized revenue from this segment surpassed $200 million, approximately doubling from the previous quarter. CEO Brian Armstrong described prediction markets as one of the fastest-growing products in Coinbase's history.
Prediction markets and derivatives together accounted for approximately 25% of Coinbase's transaction revenue. Analysts noted that these newer businesses helped offset weaker activity in spot cryptocurrency trading as the exchange pursues its strategy to become an all-in-one financial platform.
Traditional Trading Under Pressure
Coinbase's traditional trading operations continued to face headwinds. Transaction revenue fell 43% year over year to approximately $590 million. Spot trading volume declined 8% quarter over quarter to $135 billion, while derivatives trading volume decreased 7% from the previous quarter to approximately $986 billion.
Subscription and Stablecoin Revenue Growing
Subscription and services revenue contributed $570 million, accounting for nearly 49% of net revenue. Stablecoin-related revenue reached $328 million, increasing 3% quarter over quarter, reflecting Coinbase's efforts to diversify beyond market-driven trading fees.
Profitability Tied to Asset Values
The company's reported quarterly profit was significantly supported by a $715 million investment gain, highlighting how closely Coinbase's earnings remain connected to cryptocurrency valuations. The exchange's ability to sustain profitability in its newer business segments during periods of weaker digital asset prices remains to be demonstrated.
