Florida’s DMV is confirming a data breach by an international criminal group.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the agency that runs the state’s driver and vehicle records, says it learned of the incident on September 4th of 2026.
It says the breach was quickly contained and that no further breach has occurred or is ongoing.
Says the department,
“The Department immediately launched an investigation, which determined that a criminal actor was able to take advantage of a single Plant City Police Department user’s credentials that were improperly housed on the employee’s personal electronic device.”
FLHSMV notified the Florida attorney general and is working with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The department has not named the group and has not said how many records are affected. It says more will come later because the criminal investigation is still open.
The statement follows an earlier claim that an extortion group had listed Florida DMV records on a leak site and threatened to release license details, photographs, signatures and addresses.
